The Little White Owl
by Tracey Corderoy and Jane Chapman
This book is about a little owl who is living all by himself when he decides to travel to an island. He finds many owls there and they are each very unique. Little White Owl has a tough time fitting in until he begins to tell stories. At the end of the book, he has made many new friends. He flies home after promising to visit again soon.
Mini-Lesson: Questioning
This book was a great book to use when teaching questioning. Students have many questions wile reading this book! They wonder about why the owl looks different from the other, colorful owls. They ask questions about why the little owl is by himself and why he does not fit in with the colorful owls. Create a chart of student “I wonders” before reading the story and stop periodically as you read for students to add more questions to the chart. Give students time to share answers as they discover them while listening, and check or star the questions that are answered.
Mini-Lesson: Retelling
This book also had a very clear plot line. There is a beginning, middle, end, problem, and solution. The characters and setting are well-defined. This would be a perfect book to practice students recall of events.
