Jack’s Garden

Written by Henry Cole

This is a cumulative text that tells and shows what happening in Jack’s garden as it grows.

Mini-Lesson: Sequence

Cumulative texts are wonderful for supporting the understanding of sequence.  The text naturally repeat each line on every page and adds a new line at the end.  Students can practice recalling the events that the story shows.  This is also a wonderful book to rewrite on sentence strips to create a sequence activity.

Mini-Lesson: Cause and Effect

Jack’s Garden also illustrates cause and effect relationships.  The birds come to the garden because there are bugs for them to eat.  The butterflies come to the garden because there are flowers.  The seeds grow because there is rain.  The plants grow well because there are worms.  The causes and effects can be written on index cards and then be paired up to show the cause and effect relationship.
