Kevin Henkes Books

Mini-Lesson: Theme

Books written by Kevin Henkes are perfect for teaching the concepts of theme.  Each book has a central character who experiences social issues common to young children.  Begin creating a list of common themes found in children’s books: friendship, kindness, honesty, responsibility, etc.  As the books are read with the class, add themes to the list.  The list can be kept on a laminated poster/chart.  As new book are read, return to the list and star the themes found in the book.  Ask students give evidence from the story, such as an event, to support their opinion to develop the habit of close reading.

Mini-Lesson: Character

Henkes books are also great for teaching character qualities.  Each character is well developed and demonstrates many qualities, some even showing change in the book.  Create a web for the character and have students brainstorm qualities to add to the web.
