Over in the Garden

Written by Jennifer Ward

Illustrated by Kenneth J. Spengler

Over in the Garden is a song-based book that feature a rhyming texts and tells the adventures of all sorts of bugs in the garden.

Mini-Lesson: Sequencing

Each page in this book features a different insect and what that insect does in the garden. The class can create a flow chart or sequence chart featuring the insects they find on each page.  Picture cards could also be created for a student center, allowing students to order the story and then write about what happened on each page.

Mini-Lesson: Fluency and Expression

This book is a wonderful book to model reading with a great deal of fluency and expression.  It not only contains rhymes, but also contains several exclamatory sentences that add to the pattern of the text.
