Apple Trouble

Mini-Lesson: Problem and Solution

Apple Trouble by Ragnhild Scamell is a wonderful book to teach problem and solution. Brainstorm what a problem is with students. introduce the word “solution” and talk about the meaning of the word – how the problem is solved. As the problem is introduced in the story, stop to have the students identify it. Students can also make predictions about how the hedgehog will solve his problem. When the character of the goat in introduced, have the students predict how the goat will be able to help the hedgehog. At the conclusion of the story, have students discuss the solution to the problem.
