Marley Goes to School

image

Written by John Grogan

Illustrated by Richard Cowdrey

Summary: Marley the rambunctious dog sniffs his way to Cassie's school and spreads chaos as he searches for her.

Mini-Lesson: Plot, Summarizing

This is a great story to teach beginning, middle, and end to young students. There are many events that take place in the middle of the story, but it is an opportunity to teach students to summarize and make a general statement when there are several events.

While reading the book, choose a spot to pause at the beginning of the book and have students summarize the events in the beginning of the book. Do the same with the middle and the ending of the book. Students will tend to detail all the events in the middle of the book. Model how to generalize by summarizing all the events with, “Marley went to Cassie’s school and caused a lot of trouble.”
