Mini-Lesson: Questioning
This book is wonderful to teaching students to answer questions. It is especially helpful because questions can be asked throughout. Beginning with the title and the cover, have students brainstorm questions they have about the book. Chart the questions and code them with the letter "B" to indicate they are questions asked before reading. Beginning reading to book and stop at various places for additional questions. Code these questions with the letter "D" to indicate they were asked during the reading. Finally, have students add the questions they still have after reading and label them with an "A". See which questions they can answer using evidence from the text as they read.
This book is also good for focusing on asking questions about unknown vocabulary. Context clues and evidence from the text can also help students to determine the meaning of the unknown words.
