Dream Big, Little Pig

Written by Kristy Yamaguchi

Illustrated by Tim Bowers

Summary: This adorable book is about a little pig who dreams of many things she wants to do to be a star.  Each time she tries, she is told that she should try something else.  When she discovers ice skating, she finds her path to being a star.

Mini-Lesson: Theme

This is a great story for a discussion about themes.  Little Pig works hard, is positive, and never lets others discourage her.  Brainstorm possible themes with students.  The activity would lend itself nicely to writing an opinion piece about which theme the story best supports.

Mini-Lesson: Text-to-Text Connections

This book connects nicely to Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman.  Both characters have dreams, work hard, and do not get discouraged. Create a Venn diagram comparing the events, themes, or characters of the two stories.

Mini-Lesson: Characters

Little Pig is a wonderful character to use when exploring character qualities. Create a character web, encouraging students to add adjectives to the web, describing Little Pig.
