Ducks Don't Wear Socks

Ducks Don't Wear Socks

Written by John Nedwidek
Illustrated by Lee White

Summary: Emily is a very serious girl who encounters a very silly duck in a variety of places. Will she be inspired to be silly?
Mini-Lesson: Sequence
This book lends itself perfectly to sequencing events. Before reading the book, take a picture walk with students to predict the sequence of events. As you read, stop every few pages to review what events have happened. At times, review the pages read to summarize, modelling how readers can look back to remember what has happened so far. After reading the book, have students recall the events in order. The prompts "In the beginning", "Then", "Next", "After that", and "Last" can be used. The teacher may want to record events or the class can create a storyboard, illustrating the sequence of events.

Mini-Lesson: Expression
This book features a variety of punctuation. As the book is read, perhaps for the second time, point out how the punctuation tells the reader to read the sentence with expression.
