Stuck in the Mud

Written by Jane Clarke

Illustrated by Garry Parsons

Summary:
A chick becomes stuck in the mud and several farm animals attempt to help him. Will the animals be able to help the little chick, or is the story not what it seems?
Mini-Lesson: Retelling and Sequence
This story provides a great opportunity for students to practice retelling the text and putting events into sequence. Prior to reading the books, tell students to listen for the order of events, or the sequence of the story. As you read, periodically have students review the beginning of the text and the animals as they arrive to help the little chick. Use this as an opportunity to refer back to the previous pages, encouraging students to do so when they are reading. At the end of the story review the ending and make connections. Take time to discuss the setting of the story as well.
Mini-Lesson: Expression
There is a variety of punctuation int his text, as well as dialogue from several characters displaying different emotions. Take time to discuss why sentences are read to reflect the punctuation and how the mood of the character may effect how the reader sounds when reading.
